Can you have sex when you have your period?

Many women avoid sex during their period,  because of “old-fashioned” taboos.

What is certain is that there is nothing “dirty” or dangerous to do with sex and period blood.

Having sex while you’re “in the mood” has some advantages and disadvantages.

As long as it doesn’t cause you or your partner any discomfort or pain and you’ve both given your consent, there’s no reason not to go ahead.

Disadvantages:

There is still a small chance of getting pregnant while on your period. Some women may ovulate earlier than others, while some may experience an irregular cycle. In addition, sperm can survive for 5-7 days in a woman’s body, which means that fertilization can still occur if you don’t know exactly where you are in your cycle or you are experiencing an irregularity in your cycle.

If you notice spotting (light bleeding outside of your normal period that doesn’t usually require tampon protection) it could be a sign that you’re ovulating, so it’s best to use a condom if you have sex.

If spotting occurs more often than usual, it may be a sign of an underlying condition, talk to your gynecologist if you are concerned.Having sex on your period could be painful as your cervix is lower during your period, so start slowly and cautiously until you discover which positions are comfortable for you.

Advantages:

A major benefit of having sex during your period is that it can relieve cramps while boosting your mood.

Period cramps occur naturally but many women not only find them uncomfortable but also feel that they spoil their mood.

Women who have sex on their period find it helpful, as orgasms cause uterine contractions that speed up menstruation.

Having an orgasm also releases endorphins, which give the feeling of pleasure while reducing the sensation of pain. Menstrual blood also acts as a natural lubricant.
